Training Opportunity: Introduction to Economic Growth and Development

This course covers the fundamentals of economic growth and provides a general economic framework to help the participants understand the processes and pathways that can lead to sustainable development. Understanding these dynamics is an integral foundation to finding effective channels that can simultaneously address anti-growth strategies which lead to economic disparities between and within countries, while encouraging and reinforcing growth-promoting drivers. This introductory course targets early career researchers, PhD students, policymakers, government officials and other relevant civil servants from national and regional administrations.

 Format and Schedule

The course will take place over five days and consist of lectures, discussions and practical sessions. Major topics to be covered in the course include:

  1. Introduction to Stata
  2. Economic growth and development theories
  3. Fundamentals of economic growth
  4. Institutions

Target participants

This course is open to Honours, Masters and PhD students in Economics or related fields and practitioners and government officials with at least a Honours Degree.

Assessment

Participants will be assigned an exercise to complete within the initial weeks following the workshop. Upon demonstrating a thorough understanding of the workshop material through successful completion of the assignment, participants will be awarded an ERSA certificate.

Instructor

Carolyn Chisadza is an Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Pretoria. She holds a BSc (Honours) in Economics from the University of Zimbabwe, and a BCom (Honours), MCom and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pretoria. Her courses include introduction to economic growth, as well as postgraduate economic development. Her research focusses on development issues related to economic growth, inequality, conflict and quality of institutions (i.e. gender, ethnic, democratic and historical) within Africa. Her research papers have appeared in top academic journals and peer reviewed edited books (https://sites.google.com/view/carolyn-chisadza/home).

Interested applicants are requested to apply by completing the form below by Monday, 3 March 2025. Application decisions will be communicated by Wednesday, 12 March 2025.

ERSA will cover the domestic travel and accommodation costs for students based at South African institutions. Places are limited to 25 students and funding to attend the workshop is entirely at the discretion of the organiser.
