Monetary & Fiscal Policy

The Monetary and Fiscal Policy Research Programme explores how monetary and fiscal policy decisions shape economic growth and productivity. We invite you to join us in delving into the complexities of how these policies impact the economy and interact with each other. The following are some interesting topics and questions the research programme is interested in:

  • Macroeconomic Impact of Fiscal Policy Decisions: What are the implications of government spending, taxation and borrowing on macroeconomic stability and fiscal sustainability?
  • Macroeconomic Impact of Monetary Policy Decisions: How do actions by the Reserve Bank and monetary policy interventions influence borrowing costs and financial risks in the economy?
  • Economic Impact of Macroprudential Policies: How do regulatory measures designed to ensure financial stability affect the broader economy and the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policies?
  • Optimal Taxation in South Africa: What are the optimal tax rates for promoting economic stability and growth in South Africa? How do different tax policies impact markets and behaviour, including labour markets, corporate investment, inequality, and economic growth?
  • Policy Implications of Climate Change: How do regulatory changes, aimed at climate risks, impact financial market players? What are the implications of climate change for monetary policy and key adaptation requirements? How can carbon taxation be used as a key mitigation tool? Are climate change policy actions well-coordinated or do they impose unnecessary risks on society?
  • Assessment of Proposed Spending Programmes: What are the potential effects of new government spending initiatives policies?
  • Inflationary Impact of Government Policy: How do fiscal, trade, industrial, and competition and other economic policies impact consumer prices?
