Professor Smith is a Director at the Centre for the Analysis of Time Series at London School of Economics and Political Science and he received his PhD in Physics at Columbia University (USA) with expertise in Weather Forecasting For Disaster, Risk Reduction and Probability. He was active in the formation of a strategy for THORPEX (he was co-author of the Socio-Economic Impacts Chapter) and the original experimental design(s) of climateprediction.net. He wrote a book A Very Short Introduction to Chaos, published by OUP and translated into six languages with more on the way.
