The Economics of Environmental Policy

The Environmental Policy Research Programme focuses on understanding the risks and opportunities at the intersection of the environment and the economy. We invite you to join us in exploring how environmental policies impact economic growth and productivity and how they can be optimally coordinated with other critical economic policies, including fiscal, monetary, trade, industrial, competition, health, education, and labour policies. Our key focus areas include:

  • Economy-Environment Nexus: How can environmental regulations and incentives be aligned with economic objectives to foster growth and productivity while minimising trade-offs where they exist?
  • Monetary Policy: How do climate risks affect monetary policy and what is the role of central banks in addressing these challenges.
  • Labour Market: What are the labour market effects of different environmental policies and how can labour and environmental policies mitigate for these impacts?
  • Fiscal Policy: How can taxation and government spending be leveraged to drive climate action and support environmental goals? How do environmental risks affect fiscal policy?
  • Trade, Industrial and Competition Policy: How can trade and industrial strategies and competitive market practices be leveraged to promote environmental sustainability. How do environmental risks and policies impact trade and industrial outcomes?
  • Education, Health, and Environmental Risks: What are the risks of climate change and other environmental risks to the education and health outcomes?
