ERSA would like to welcome Professor Manoel Bittencourt as our new Research Director from the beginning of this year. He is also an extraordinary professor of economics at the University of Pretoria and affiliated with the universities of Goettingen, Heidelberg and Oxford.
Manoel is a Brazilian/British economist whose areas of research are growth and development economics. He focuses on the role of political-regime characteristics on government size and macroeconomic performance, and in the determinants of democracy. He has also studied the determinants of fertility rates within unified growth theory. His papers have appeared in journals such as Journal of Banking and Finance, Economic Modelling, Economic Systems, Economics of Governance, Economics of Transition and Institutional Change, Journal of Economic Policy Reform and Journal of Policy Modelling.
Having been a part of ERSA since 2019, Manoel has been involved in the Webinars on Structural Constraints on the Economy, Growth and Political Economy and has published several papers on inflation and financial development, economic growth and democracy and education, in the ERSA working paper series. Manoel is also an associate editor of the South African Journal of Economics, Journal of Public Finance and Public Choice.
Manoel holds a Dip in Economics from the University of Warwick, and a MSc and PhD in Economics from the University of Bristol.
